Program Overview

The 5-week radio host training program at InceptionFM is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to excel in this dynamic field. Classes meet twice a week for two hours, totaling 10 hours of hands-on training. By the end of the program, participants will:

  • Develop an engaging on-air presence.
  • Learn to operate digital radio equipment and software.
  • Write and produce radio scripts and promos.
  • Host a simulated live broadcast.
  • Build a demo reel to showcase their work.


Located at 26 Court Street, Suite 715, Brooklyn, NY 11242, InceptionFM combines practical training with real-world experience.

Foundations of Radio Broadcasting 

Session 1.1: The Evolution of Radio Broadcasting

  • The birth of radio in the early 20th century and its role in mass communication.
  • Transition from AM/FM broadcasting to satellite and digital platforms.
  • Modern applications, including podcasts and live streaming.


Session 1.2: Exploring Formats and Genres

  • Music radio, talk shows, news broadcasts, and specialty programs.
  • Determining your niche and audience.
  • Case studies of successful radio programs and hosts.


Session 1.3: Equipment Overview

  • Introduction to microphones, headphones, soundboards, and mixers.
  • Digital editing tools (e.g., Audacity, Adobe Audition).
  • Hands-on practice setting up and testing equipment.


Assignment: Create a short demo introducing yourself and your show concept.

Week 2

Developing Your Radio Personality 

Session 2.1: Finding Your Voice

  • Exercises for improving tone, clarity, and projection.
  • Overcoming nerves and building confidence behind the mic.

Session 2.2: Engaging Your Audience

  • Techniques to connect with listeners.
  • Developing a relatable, authentic persona.

Session 2.3: Storytelling and Improvisation

  • Building narratives to keep audiences engaged.
  • Handling unexpected moments during live broadcasts.


Assignment: Record a 5-minute segment sharing a personal story or opinion. 










Week 3

Scriptwriting and Show Planning 

Session 3.1: Writing Scripts for Radio

  • Writing engaging intros and outros.
  • Creating smooth transitions between segments.


Session 3.2: Organizing a Show Plan

  • Building playlists and segment schedules.
  • Managing timing to avoid dead air.


Session 3.3: Producing Ads and Promos

  • Crafting scripts for commercials and announcements.
  • Recording and editing promotional material.


Assignment: Write and produce a 30-second promo for your show.

Week 4

Technical Skills and Production 

Session 4.1: Audio Editing Basics

  • Recording voice tracks with proper sound levels.
  • Editing and mixing music, effects, and voiceovers.


Session 4.2: Using Broadcasting Software

  • Overview of software like Mixxx, SAM Broadcaster, and Zeno Radio.
  • Setting up live streaming and automation tools.


Session 4.3: Troubleshooting Technical Issues

  • Identifying and fixing common sound problems.
  • Managing equipment malfunctions during live broadcasts.


Assignment: Edit and produce a 10-minute pre-recorded show.

Week 5

Going Live and Managing Interviews 

Session 5.1: Simulating a Live Broadcast

  • Running a mock live show, including intros, music transitions, and calls.
  • Monitoring timing and pacing.


Session 5.2: Interviewing Skills

  • Researching guests and preparing questions.
  • Keeping interviews conversational and engaging.


Session 5.3: Listener Interaction

  • Managing calls and live chats.
  • Building community engagement through contests or Q&A segments.


Assignment: Host a 20-minute live session with guest interviews and audience interaction.

Final Review

Building a Portfolio and Career Path 

Session 7.1: Creating a Demo Reel

  • Compiling recorded segments and interviews into a professional demo.
